Otto Wichterle - his personality and patents

Abstract

Bakalářská práce je zaměřena na osobnost a život českého akademika prof. Otty Wichterleho (1913-1998). Již padesát let uplynulo od chvíle, kdy český vědec Otto Wichterle učinil objev, který dnes znamená pro životy mnoha lidí obrovskou úlevu vzhledem ke korekci svých refrakčních vad. Právě tento vědec a výborný chemik vynalezl materiál používaný pro výrobu měkkých kontaktních čoček, takzvaný průhledný poly(2-hydroxyethyl-methakrylátový) gel. Práce shrnuje dětství, kariéru, vynálezy a veškeré patenty profesora, pojednává o tehdejší komunistické době, ve které prof. Otto Wichterle žil i o politických zákazech, které mu byly dobou uděleny.

This bachelor thesis focuses upon the personality and life of the Czech chemist Prof. Otto Wichterle (1913-1998). Fifty years have past since Prof. Wichterle invented the material used for producing soft contact lenses, the clear poly-2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate gel. His invention has given tremendours relief to many by correcting their refractive defects. This thesis deals with his childhood, career, inventions and lists all of this patents. It also includes some details concerning the communist era in which Prof. Wichterle lived, as well as the political restrictions which were placed upon him and his colleagues
